CBD for Focus: Can it Really Help You Stay on Task?

By Trista Okel

We all know that feeling of having a long to-do list, but somehow not being able to stay focused long enough to complete the tasks at hand. From emails to meetings to distractions from social media, it can be challenging to stay on track and accomplish everything we need to do in a day.

Enter CBD, a compound that has been making waves in the health and wellness industry for its potential benefits for focus and concentration.

But can CBD really help you stay on task and get more done?

Let’s explore the science behind CBD for focus and concentration, how to use it effectively, and potential side effects to watch for.

Understanding CBD and its Effects on the Brain

Let's start with the basics: what is CBD, and how does it work in the body?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound found in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), another compound found in cannabis, CBD does not produce an intoxicating "high."

Instead, CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex system of receptors and neurotransmitters that help regulate a wide range of bodily functions, including mood, appetite, pain, and more. The ECS also plays a role in regulating focus and attention.

Research has shown that CBD may help boost levels of anandamide, a neurotransmitter that has been linked to feelings of well-being and improved focus. CBD may also help reduce levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that can interfere with focus and concentration.

Forms of CBD and Dosage Recommendations

If you're interested in trying CBD for focus and productivity, there are a few different forms of CBD to consider, including tinctures, topicals, and more. Each form of CBD has its own benefits and drawbacks, so it's important to choose the one that's right for your needs.

Tinctures/Drops:

9000mg Mint CBD drops

CBD tinctures are liquid extracts that can be taken orally or added to food or beverages. Tinctures are easy to use and offer a relatively fast onset time. Tinctures are alcohol-based, which means that the CBD is extracted from the hemp plant using alcohol.

The plant matter is then filtered out of the tincture, creating an alcohol-based tincture. Drops are oil-based. Meaning that the CBD (a fat soluble compound) is infused into oil, usually MCT oil or, in the case of Empower, organic fractionated coconut oil. Because the flavor of hemp-derived CBD is often herbaceous and grassy, some companies, like Empower, choose to flavor their products.

Empower uses natural mint extract to give the Drops a refreshing, bright flavor. Many companies use artificial flavors, but Empower will never use an artificial flavor or scent.

CBD Topicals:

CBD topicals, such as creams and oils, can be applied directly to the skin. Topicals are often used for localized pain and inflammation, both of which can be distracting when trying to concentrate. By soothing discomfort, topicals can be used to help focus.

When it comes to dosage, topicals can and should be used as often as necessary to achieve your desired level of relief. They only work locally (where applied) so there is no chance of ever using too much.

When it comes to dosage for edibles, tinctures, or Drops, it's important to start low and go slow. CBD affects everyone differently, so it's best to start with a small dose and gradually increase it as needed.

A general rule of thumb is to start with 5-10 mg of CBD per day and increase as desired up to a maximum of 50-100 mg per day. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially if you are taking medications or have underlying health conditions.

CBD does interact with a few medications, so it’s important to talk with your doctor before ingesting CBD.

Tips for Using CBD for Focus and Productivity

If you're considering using CBD to boost your focus and productivity, there are a few things to keep in mind. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your CBD experience:

Choose a high-quality CBD product

Look for CBD products that have been third party lab-tested for purity and potency. Make sure that the batch of product matches the batch listed on the Certificate of Analysis from the third party testing lab. If you have a CBD product without a batch number, on the exterior packaging, be wary. Batch numbers can be found on the outer box of our lotions, creams, and oil, on the bottle of our Drops, and on the pouch that our bath salts are packaged in. Avoid products that contain additives or artificial ingredients.

Use CBD consistently

CBD works best when used consistently over time. It's a good idea to take CBD daily, preferably at the same time each day, to maintain consistent levels in your system. Since everyone’s body is different, sometimes it takes more time for people to feel a difference with CBD. Stick to it, and see what works for you. Consider talking with your doctor about dosage if you’re not feeling a difference after 30 days.

Combine CBD with other focus-boosting activities

While CBD may be helpful on its own, it's even more effective when combined with other activities that promote focus and productivity, such as exercise, mindfulness, meditation, and a healthy diet.

Start low and go slow

As mentioned earlier, when ingesting CBD, it's important to start with a low dose of CBD and gradually increase as needed. This will help you find the optimal dose for your needs without experiencing unwanted side effects.

Monitor your response

Pay attention to how you feel after taking CBD. If you notice any adverse effects, such as drowsiness or nausea, reduce your intake or stop taking CBD altogether.

Potential Side Effects of CBD

While CBD is generally considered safe, it can cause some side effects in certain individuals. More common side effects of CBD include drowsiness, dry mouth, and nausea. CBD can also interact with certain medications, so it's important to speak with a healthcare provider before using CBD if you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications.

Can CBD Help With Focus?

CBD has gained popularity as a potential natural remedy for a variety of ailments, including anxiety, pain, and inflammation. While research on CBD and focus is still in its early stages, there is some promising evidence to suggest that CBD may have benefits for improving cognitive function and reducing distractions.

If you're considering using CBD for focus and productivity, it's important to choose a high-quality product, start with a low dose, and monitor your response closely.

While CBD is generally considered safe, it's always a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement.

Overall, CBD may be a useful tool for staying focused and productive, especially when used in combination with other healthy habits like exercise, mindfulness, and a healthy diet.
